The progression just feels off putting: "get talismans, liberate maps, do 4 and get to the final boss" sounds like every other run of the mill game that had to stretch it out for 20 ish levels.
#Serious sam 2 full
Its always a balancing act.SS2, went full nuts: sam was the least goofy aspect of it, and no balance of that goofy vs serious. We loved it.TLDR serious design, simple execution in flow, very talented but goofy character. And it had a straightforward journey of "kill all the bad guys, get to the boss, kill the boss". insanely good with a gun but probably dimmer than a squash. It works on its own, but Serious Sam is famous for its serious, beautiful (sometimes downright gorgeous, even by today's standards) level design, and balancing it with the hero who is.

It's if you'd take a bunch of mushrooms and watched old Looney Tunes. Second, the art style - its not just cartoonish, it's basically tripping balls levels of kooky.

It's not bad, per se, but its not what we were looking for after the first 2 games. Most of the game is basically casually shooting hordes, and you have enough to stand and pick them off with relative ease, even rush them. You basically have this challenge of gradually facing larger and larger hordes of enemies in either fully open/half open arenas or small enemies in a closed off rooms - and the challenge is to not rush them, but make your way out of their path while making sure you are taking them out, as precisely and as fast and efficient as you can.SS2 doesn't really follow that theme - not entirely. Well, there's a bit to unpack here.First of all, the theme of the older games has been an insane arena shooter that was also a "walk backwards while holding the fire button" simulator. If you still end up liking it, Siberian Mayhem will be extremely fun. If you end up liking that game too, try Serious Sam 4. If you happen to like these games too, then try Sam 3. So, I suggest you start with the encounters (HD or not - up to you). Siberian Mayhem is basically improved, shorter SS4, so it may make no sense without knowledge of the story but is probably the best Serious Sam content we got since The Second Encounter. But as long as you stay outside of buildings the game can look awesome, and the gunplay is imo the best from the series, every gun feels extremely satisfying to use. Serious Sam 4 tries to go back to that silly humor but kind of overdoes it, and has A LOT OF CUTSCENES. Serious Sam 3 is VERY realistic, less colour, more realistic enemies, tactics, weapons, and less dumb humor. Even then they take on a more realistic approach only with silly jokes here and there. Most similar is probably The Second Encounter, which has various levels with differing color schemes, but for that you'd need to start with TFE. Serious Sam 2 has a VERY cartoonish style.
